Atomic Energy Sector

KACAREGoal

Research Center Project which includes Multi-Purpose Research Reactor (MPRR)

The atomic energy sector is working on the Multi-Purpose Research Reactor (MPRR) project, which serve as strategic enablers for K.A.CARE tasks in the atomic energy field. They contribute to achieving self-sufficiency in radioactive isotopes for the Kingdom, as well as developing and localizing nuclear technologies that support achieving the objectives of the national atomic energy project. This facility also plays an important role in qualifying human resources, supporting the infrastructure of the atomic sector in the Kingdom.

KACAREGoal

Radioactive Waste Management at the National Level

As part of the atomic energy sector, the National Center for Radioactive Waste Management manages K.A.CARE facility in Al Khasira. The center is currently working on the implementation of an environmental monitoring program for the facility and the provision of security guard. It is planned that the center will qualify the facility for national-level storage of radioactive waste after obtaining the necessary licenses from the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission (NRRC). The center also carries out various other tasks, such as

  • Develop and implement the national framework for radioactive waste in the Kingdom.
  • Build and operate facilities for radioactive waste.
  • Provide consultancy services related to radioactive waste.
KACAREGoal

Introducing Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Technology to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

The atomic energy sector is studying the introduction of SMR technology, which is relatively new on a global scale, to the Kingdom. This is done by continuously following the development in the field of SMRs and developing an initial roadmap for introducing this technology to the Kingdom. The roadmap involves a gradual approach, starting from studying national needs and ending with the development of a practical model for the technology.
