Presently, a considerable proportion of all solid waste in Saudi Arabia is placed in landfill sites even with the Kingdom recycling track. Despite being unglamorous, waste-to-energy plants are a concept being considered by K●A●CARE in order to reduce landfill and the inter-related problem of ground and air pollution. Their technology is mature and also clean. The choice of technology will be wholly central to the economic viability of this process and opportunities are perceived to exist for innovation in the Kingdom to take the technology forward. K●A●CARE is therefore recommending the generation of 3GW of electricity from wastes by 2032.
