 “Vice President of King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy Dr. Waleed AbulFaraj heads the Kingdom’s delegation participating in the activities of the international conference commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of Chernobyl disaster”

The international conference of donor and contributing countries to the construction of Chernobyl shelter was held on Monday April 26, 2016 on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of Chernobyl disaster that occurred on the morning of April 26th 1986, proceedings of the conference has seen in its first day  a session for the donor countries contributors to the construction of the shelter of Chernobyl reactor.  During said session the head of the Kingdom's delegate participating in the conference, the Vice President of King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy Dr. Waleed AbulFaraj delivered a speech  in which he confirmed the Kingdom's active role in tackling the issues of nuclear safety and security in international forums including the kingdom's initiative to establish an international center for combating nuclear terrorism at the United Nations headquarters and is currently coordinating with the International Agency for Atomic Energy at the Agency's location in Vienna, he also stressed the kingdom's active role with the international community to  assist Ukraine to solve the problem which threatens the leak and spread of radioactive material from the destroyed Chernobyl reactor after 1986 disaster.

 

In the next day the Ukrainian government organized a field visit to Chernobyl location to acquaint the donor and contributing countries representatives participating in the conference with the projects being implemented at Chernobyl location, the most important of which is the full and hermetic containment of the current   concrete building that encases the reactor of the fourth unit at Chernobyl nuclear station which was destroyed as a result of the disaster and also aim at building a steel dome to prevent the cracking of the destroyed reactor's concrete casing and to prevent the spread of radioactive material through isolating it from the atmosphere and the surrounding environment, as well as the project of  constructing a station to process and store nuclear fuel from Chernobyl reactors after its closure and the last one was in the year 2000G.   During the visit and in the presence of the Ukrainian President Mr. Petro Poroshenko the third agreement to modify the donor agreement between the Ukrainian government and the European Bank for Development and re-construction was signed for the allocation of additional contribution from the bank for the construction of a warehouse to store the nuclear fuel from Chernobyl reactors.
